  14.         <text><span class="style42"></span><span class="style12">UZBEKISTAN</span><span class="style14"></span><span class="style42">Official name: </span><span class="style13">Ozbekiston Jumhuriyati (Republic of Uzbekistan)</span><span class="style42">Member of: </span><span class="style13">UN, CIS, OSCE</span><span class="style42">Area: </span><span class="style13">447400 km2 (172700 sq mi)</span><span class="style42">Population: </span><span class="style13">21180000 (1993 est)</span><span class="style42">Capital: </span><span class="style13">Tashkent 2120000 (1992 est)</span><span class="style42">Other major cities: </span><span class="style13">Samarkand (Samarqand) 372000, Namangan 333000 (1991 census)</span><span class="style42">Languages:</span><span class="style13"> Uzbek (official; 71%), Russian (8%), Tajik (4%)</span><span class="style42">Religion: </span><span class="style13">Sunni Islam majority</span><span class="style42">GOVERNMENT</span><span class="style13">A 150-member Assembly (Majlis) is elected for four years by universal adult suffrage. The President is directly elected for five years. The only legal political party is the (former Communist) PeopleΓÇÖs Democratic Party.</span><span class="style42">GEOGRAPHY</span><span class="style13">Western Uzbekistan is flat and mainly desert. The mountainous east includes ridges of the Tien Shan and part of the Fergana valley. </span><span class="style42">Climate: </span><span class="style13">Uzbekistan has a warm continental climate characterized by hot summers and low rainfall. Only the mountains receive over 500 mm (20 in) of rain a year.</span><span class="style42">ECONOMY</span><span class="style13">Uzbekistan is one the worldΓÇÖs leading producers of cotton, but the extraction of irrigation from the Amu Darya and its tributaries has contributed to the gradual shrinkage of the Aral Sea. The republic has important reserves of natural gas and major machine and heavy engineering industries. The economy is still mainly state-owned and centrally planned, and reforms have been slowed by the government. </span><span class="style42">Currency: </span><span class="style13">Som.</span><span class="style42">HISTORY</span><span class="style13">The region was overrun by the Persians (6th century BC), the Arabs (8th century ad) and the Mongols (13th century), before becoming the center of the empire of Tamerlane (Timur) and his descendants. The Uzbek khanates of Bukhara and Khiva were established in the 15th and 16th centuries respectively. Tsarist Russia first attempted to invade the region in 1717, but the Uzbeks did not finally come under Russian rule until the khans of Bukhara and Khiva became vassals of the Tsar (1868ΓÇô73). After the Russian Revolution, the Basmachi revolt (1918ΓÇô22) resisted Soviet rule, but the khans were eventually deposed (1920) and Soviet republics established (1923ΓÇô24). Uzbekistan was created in 1924, when the boundaries of Soviet Central Asia were reorganized. Independence was declared after the abortive coup in Moscow by Communist hardliners  and international recognition was achieved when the USSR was dissolved (1991). Alleged abuses of human rights in independent Uzbekistan have attracted international criticism.</span></text>
